How the network log is recorded
Each reading pulls fee estimates, mempool size, difficulty and hashrate from mempool.space, spot prices from Binance’s public market data, and Ethereum fee history from a public JSON-RPC node. We compute dollar costs with fixed formulas, keep the last good data on failures and never backfill.
Data sources
| Data | Source | Latest snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended fee rates, mempool, difficulty, hashrate, block height | mempool.space REST API | 15 Oct 2026, 14:59 UTC |
| BTC and ETH price (USDT pairs as a USD proxy) | Binance spot public market data | 15 Oct 2026, 14:59 UTC |
| Ethereum base fee, priority tips, block fullness | eth_feeHistory via the public endpoint ethereum-rpc.publicnode.com | 15 Oct 2026, 14:59 UTC |
USDT is a stablecoin that usually trades close to one US dollar but is not identical to it; dollar figures are therefore approximations. We do not use exchange prices to promote any exchange, and we carry no exchange affiliate links.
When readings are taken
A refresh script runs on a schedule on our own machine, fetches every source, and rebuilds the static site. Each reading is stored with its own timestamp in UTC. A day’s archive page is created only when at least one reading was actually recorded that day; the log began on 15 October 2026 and contains nothing before then.
Failures and stale data
If a source fails, we keep the last good values for that source and print its real timestamp with a “stale” warning. We never interpolate, estimate missing readings or substitute another source silently. Any reading older than six hours at build time is flagged as stale on the page.
Transaction size formulas
Virtual size = 10 vB overhead + inputs + outputs, plus 0.5 vB when any input carries witness data, rounded up (BIP 141 weight ÷ 4). Standard sizes used:
| Type | Input (vB) | Output (vB) |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy P2PKH | 148 | 34 |
| Nested SegWit P2SH-P2WPKH | 91 | 32 (P2SH) |
| Native SegWit P2WPKH | 68 | 31 |
| Taproot P2TR (key path) | 57.5 | 43 |
Fee (sats) = ceil(size × rate). USD = sats ÷ 100,000,000 × BTC price. An Ethereum transfer = 21,000 gas × (latest base fee + median 50th-percentile tip over the last 20 blocks).
Sea-state bands
Backlog in blocks = total pending virtual size ÷ 1,000,000 vB. Bands: Calm under 1; Light swell 1–3; Choppy 3–10; Rough 10–30; Storm 30 or more. These bands are our reading aid, not an industry standard, and do not by themselves predict the fee you need.
Countdown estimates
Halving dates use the protocol target of 600 seconds per block. Difficulty projections are taken from mempool.space and assume the current epoch’s average block time continues.
Corrections
If you find an error, email contact@dailycryptonews.online. Corrections to guides are dated in the guide’s “last reviewed” line. Recorded readings are not edited after the fact; if a source later revises a value, the log keeps what was observed. See also about us and today’s network log.
